Geography
Vision
Our vision for Geography at Seaview Primary School is for a high-quality geography curriculum which inspires children’s curiosity and fascination about the world and its people. Our teaching equips children with knowledge about places and people; resources in the environment; physical and human processes; and formation and use of landscapes. We want children to develop geographical skills: collecting and analysing data; using maps, globes, aerial photographs and digital mapping to name and identify countries, continents and oceans; and communicating information in a variety of ways. By being aware and informed about the local environment and the rest of the World, we hope this will equip the children to understand their place in the World and the influence they can have in shaping and protecting it.
Curriculum
The geography curriculum is centered around 6 geographical skills: locational knowledge, place knowledge, human and physical geography, map skills, fieldwork and geographical enquiry skills.
Our curriculum begins by giving the children the opportunity to learn about their immediate location and, as they move through the key stages, this develops to the wider world. This is mirrored by place knowledge, where children focus on our immediate environment then expanding to places in Europe and the wider world as they progress through the school.
Human and physical geography focuses on children making comparisons between the human and physical features of the places they have studied.
Map skills are an integral part of the curriculum. We use a range of map types, including atlases, online maps and Ordnance Survey maps, for the children to develop map reading skills. They are taught how to create maps in various ways. Our younger children begin by using concrete objects to create maps and a clear progression of skills builds to include keys and introduce scale for our KS2 children.
Being outdoors in Geography is imperative to ensure the children can maximise their understanding of the world around them. Fieldwork lessons allow the children the opportunity to engage with the environment and apply the skills and knowledge they have gained.
To develop curiosity and understanding, the children learn to ask and answer questions about the places they are studying. These skills develop over their time in our school and we are proud of the complex enquires our children can engage in, readying them for geography adventures in KS3.
SEND & Inclusion
Our aim is to offer an inclusive curriculum that is relevant and adapted to the needs and abilities of all children. Inclusive opportunities, such as practical activities and visual learning, are deployed to raise self-esteem and celebrate success so that all learners can reach their true full potential. Individual inclusive practices are put in place where required.
