Music

Vision

Our vision for Music at Seaview Primary School is to ensure that all children develop their confidence, communication skills, thinking and creative skills and improve their emotional well-being through playing, singing, creating and performing. We aim to provide them with the opportunity to play a musical instrument while they are at our school which may enable them to become a musician of the future.

Curriculum

The music curriculum is made up of three main strands: singing, playing an instrument, and creating and composing. Children also build upon active listening, rhythm, pulse and melody throughout the curriculum.

In singing, children learn and sing songs from a range of genres. EYFS children develop a love for nursery rhymes and well known songs and feel confident to sing and perform. In KS1, children use their voice expressively, creatively and using the correct melody. Children in lower KS2 sing in unison, maintaining the correct pitch and perform with an increasing range of notes. In upper KS2, children sing in solo, unison and in parts using clear diction, controlled pitch and sense of phrase.

In playing an instrument, our children learn how to hold, play and perform using a variety of un-tuned and tuned percussion instruments and instruments belonging to the wind family. EYFS children begin by learning the names of un-tuned percussion instruments and how to play them. Tuned percussion is then introduced to the children. In KS1, children learn to play a 4-hole ocarina, learning the names of notes and where they sit on a musical stave. They can perform pieces of music with up to 4 notes. Children in lower KS2 learn how to play the recorder building on the existing notes that they know, learning more and performing pieces using up to 6 notes. In upper KS2, children learn to play the clarinet and are able to perform more complex pieces of music using up to 8 notes.

Our create and compose curriculum aims to ensure that children use the skills they have developed through active listening, singing and playing an instrument to devise their own pieces to perform, appraise and enjoy.

SEND and Inclusion

The Seaview music curriculum holds high expectations for all and a clear progression of skills. For some learners, music can be a medium to break down barriers that may exist in other curriculum subjects. The nature of the subject allows freedom and flexibility in musical expression, preferences and performance that is inclusive and accessible to all. This is beneficial, not only for musical development, but for the growth of self-confidence and for the fostering of creative flair in all learners. The curriculum has been carefully designed to ensure it is inclusive and accessible for all.
