PSHE & RSE
Vision
Our vision, at Seaview Primary School, for PSHE and RSE, is to provide our children with an equal opportunity to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes they need to effectively navigate the complexities of life. We want our learners to have the understanding and confidence to tackle many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up such as friendships, emotional wellbeing and change, to enable them to become independent, thriving and active members of society.
Curriculum
Getting to know our children as individuals is at the heart of our PSHE and RSE curriculum. We follow the PSHE Associations Thematic Curriculum to ensure all statutory objectives outlined in the National Curriculum have been met. However, in line with our school’s ethos, we want to give our children more. Working alongside parents, teachers, professionals in our community and most importantly, the children themselves, we have developed a bespoke PSHE and RSE curriculum to meet the needs of our learners.
We are aware of the challenges, risks and dangers posed to the children in our community - such as living by the sea. In response, we have developed a set of non-negotiable objectives, which are taught at the start of each academic year. These objectives are delivered in a spiral approach, building on existing learning and provide deepening knowledge and challenge each year. The goal is to equip children with the understanding and knowledge to keep themselves safe within our community.
The rest of the PSHE and RSE curriculum is split into three main strands: Relationships, Living in the Wider World and Health and Well-being.
In the Relationships strand, children explore families and friendships, safe and healthy relationships and respect of themselves and others. This strand heavily focuses on accepting and understanding difference, enhancing self-esteem and the important issue of consent.
The Living in the Wider World strand helps our children get a sense of belonging by helping them identify groups they belong to within our community as well as helping children accept diversity and difference within society. It encourages children to find their voice and teaches them how to appropriately challenge injustices and stereotypes. Children learn how to stay safe online and as well as helping learners question what is reality within the media and digital world. This strand also helps children to discover more about roles and opportunities available in the working environment, the role money has within our world as well providing children with the skills to begin to learn how to manage money.
The Health and Well-being strand equips children with the knowledge to stay safe within our community, understand how to identify and manage their feelings as well as understanding physical and mental health. Children also learn about changes that they go through as they develop into young adult-hood.
All strands are taught using the spiral approach, deepening and building upon prior knowledge whilst providing age appropriate challenge.
Relationships and Sex Education is learning about relationships and the emotional, social and physical aspects of growing up. All learning is at an age-appropriate level.
Our curriculum is enhanced with exciting learning experiences such as celebrating key events and awareness days like Anti-Bullying Week and Mental Health Week as well as providing children with opportunities for them to make a contribution to helping others such as taking part in Red Nose Day and Children in Need.
A main component of our curriculum is helping children identify, understand and regulate their mental health. To help with this, we have specially trained students, who provide emotional support to their peers. Our Well-being Warriors champion mental health across the school and take an active role in organising special assemblies and events throughout our school
We also encourage and value our children’s ideas, suggestions and opinions and want our children to understand how their voice can make a difference. Our student ambassadors work with their classes to ensure that all of our student voices are heard.
SEND and Inclusion
We pride ourselves on ensuring our PSHE and RSE curriculum is inclusive for all our learners. Many of our PSHE lessons include stories, social stories, scenarios and video clips to provide the opportunity for children to engage in real life and current topics in a safe and structured way. Role-play activities are also included to help children play out scenarios that they may find themselves in. To help prepare some of our learners for adulthood, we have also developed a life skills and life experience curriculum which aims to provide further support to help them on their journey to become more independent.
